The Last Five Books I Read
Here’s a look at the last five books I read—what kept me turning pages, what fell flat, and the one that blew me away.
When She Was Me by Marlee Bush — ★★★☆☆
I clocked the twist about two-thirds of the way in, but it didn’t ruin the experience. Creepy atmosphere and a few genuine chills made it worth the read, even if it didn’t totally surprise me.
Cross My Heart by Megan Collins — ★★★½☆
This one delivered an early twist that hooked me, but it didn’t quite follow through in a way that knocked my socks off. Still, I stayed invested and enjoyed the ride.
The House of Doors by Tan Twan Eng — ★★★★★
Stunning. Eng’s prose is gorgeous, and the way real historical figures and headlines are woven into the narrative through Somerset as a character is brilliant. Easily my favorite of the five—this book is a beaut.
The Vegetarian by Kang Han — ★★★★☆
Weird, unsettling, and completely unique. A quirky, surreal dive into identity, family, and desire. It’s one of those books that lingers long after you close it.
The House of My Mother by Shari Franke — ★★★★☆
A wild, heartbreaking story that’s almost unbelievable. The writing sometimes feels a bit juvenile, but considering the timeliness of the subject matter, it makes sense. It’s raw, emotional, and impossible to look away from.
